It’s interesting how the subtle differences between the two versions of this scene make for very different paintings. India 2 is markedly energetic, due to slashing vertical line of the oar/pole and the the upward thrusting of the boat. I prefer the calmer India 1 myself – perhaps because it feels a little more balanced, but just as likely because it brings me a soothing stillness.
